With the upcoming release of iOS 13 this fall, Apple will once again be revising its list of supported devices. Nothing surprising here, just the usual incremental drops in device support that happen each year:
iPhone support for iOS 13 will be dropping the iPhone 5S, 6, and 6+ base models; the new baseline for support will be the iPhone 6S/SE and up.
iPad support will be dropping the iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 1; the new baselines for support will be the iPad 5+, iPad Mini 4+, iPad Air 2+, and iPad Pro series. Also interesting is that iOS for iPads is becoming a formal branch of iOS – “iPadOS <versionnumber>” – which will make support extra confusing until we all internalize the naming change (and figure out how much impact, if any, it will actually have on tablet-specific app support).
