You buy insurance. You fund your IRA and/or 401K and take the time to find a good school for your kids. You plan for the future and the preservation of what you have. Yet, when it comes to the preserving your digital documents, often times you forget.

Maybe you went out and bought external hard drives during a Black Friday sale, or maybe you burned DVDs, or used the Cloud as your backup. But did you test it to verify that it worked? Until you double check, you don’t really know that your data has been stored on your backup device.

While you are thinking about electronic devices that need to be backed up, don’t forget about your smart phone. Nowadays, most people have albums-worth of photos and songs on them, and you don’t want to assume that all your precious memories and favorite tunes are on the cloud or synced to your computer without double checking.

Being careful about where you put all the files that matter most to you is crucial if these files have sentimental value. 

Even though you have a reliable computer that has high specifications, any type of disruption can occur. One of them is a ransomware attack that can hold your computer files hostage. These files could be photos, videos, and other files that embed an important experience.

Cloud storage is a great option for protecting computer data. It is better to ask your cloud provider about the security limitations they have at their disposal. Your files will only be secured when the cloud storage creates a new version of the file, a process known as versioning. Armed this, the backup files stored in the cloud become more secure than those stored in hardware storage.
